I used to chase shiny objects.
Now I ask: what happens after I catch it?
For most of my life, I could easily imagine what I wanted—
but not what life would be like once I had it.
I was a motivated fool.
I pursued things that looked exciting…
only to find they were just a drag to manage.
A business that tied me down.
A big new pickup truck that was hard to navigate around town.
It wasn’t until I turned 40 that I developed the mental and emotional capacity to think further ahead.
Now I ask: “If I had this, what would my life be like then?”
That question forces me to think a step ahead.
It filters out distractions from what I truly value.
And it keeps me from building myself into structures I don’t actually want.
In PSIU terms, it’s the difference between a raw Innovator —always chasing the new—and a seasoned one who has come up through the grind of producing and stabilizing to find a harmonizing balance. The maturity comes from experience, from trying a lot, from burning energy in the wrong directions—until you finally learn subtraction.
The shiny object isn’t the point.
The system you’ll be living inside after you get it—that’s the point.

📌 P.S. I’m grateful I didn’t have this foresight too early. The missteps gave me the maturity and experienced I needed. There’s a saying that wisdom can’t be taught, it must be experienced. Do you agree?
